Our easy resume tips

Put our AI resume maker to work

Creating your resume can be one of the worst parts of applying for jobs, especially if you’re not used to writing about yourself. If you’re struggling with where and how to get your search moving, Adecco is the perfect starting place.

Our new AI resume maker lets you create a quick and easy resume, customized to your unique background. Unlike other resume builders where you still need to write the text yourself – ours allows you to use your phone or computer microphone to talk through each of your past jobs and responsibilities.

That’s where AI steps in. Our resume maker includes additional details and smooths over your response, so you’re left with a polished and complete job description.

Once that’s done, you can enter your skills and choose which resume design best fits your “brand.” The best part is that the resume maker works on any device and in more than 50 different languages.

Keep your resume in Word format

There are a number of reasons why a recruiter will ask for your resume to be in a Word document and not a PDF. Applicant Tracking Systems (ATSs) – those portals where you have to upload your information – have an easier time reading Word docs, and it allows recruiters to make quick updates to your resume if it’s needed to submit your application.

Address any unemployment gaps

Whether you were laid off, had caregiver responsibilities, or just needed a break, you need to be smart about how you discuss the times when you weren’t working. It’s easy for hiring managers to misinterpret a gap, so explaining it in your cover letter or resume is absolutely critical. You can even use it as an opportunity to highlight the skills you did develop while unemployed.

Stand out from the crowd

It’s easy for a resume to get lost in the stack, especially if you’re applying to an entry-level job or you’re in a competitive industry. However, standing apart doesn’t mean a gimmicky format or using trendy buzzwords. Getting noticed starts with having a concise, well-structured resume.

Avoid obvious mistakes

Did you proofread your resume before sending it out? Did you make sure your CV includes all the mandatory skill sets listed in the job description? Speeding through your application is an easy way to make avoidable mistakes. Usually a misspelled word might not make or break your chances, but it can be the deciding factor between you and an equally qualified candidate.

Don’t forget to update your LinkedIn

Once you’ve polished up your resume, it’s always a smart move to update your LinkedIn profile as well. It’s a great way for recruiters to find you – and if a hiring manager decides to Google your name, that LinkedIn profile is likely to show up.

A special note for veterans and military spouses

Veterans and military spouses regularly face resume bias, whether it’s from using military lingo or having employment gaps from regular moves. Many hiring managers are likely unaware of how your military certifications and experience translate to their workplace, or they mistakenly believe your resume just belongs to a frequent job hopper.
