Changing jobs is challenging in many different ways. Finding and applying to job openings is time consuming, from updating your resume to researching companies to preparing for interviews.
In the midst of all that work, it can be hard to decide if a job opportunity is the right fit for you.
To help you better understand how to find the right job, we compiled a list of questions to inspire you to dig a little deeper and decide what matters most.
Grab a pen and paper – or just pull up your Notes app – and jot down your answers to the questions below.
What is my goal for the next job?
For some people, finding their absolutely perfect dream job is their one and only goal in finding a new job. However, that’s not the case for every person on the job hunt. Some people are looking for flexibility or need a job with a short commute.

What do I want to wear to work every day?
This seems like a silly question, but you should think about your ideal workplace environment. A casual, jeans-and-T-shirt workplace is much different than one that requires dress shoes and slacks. And those are much different from a remote work wardrobe that’s essentially pajamas.
What are my strengths?
Are you great at talking to new people? Are you better at problem-solving solo? Understanding your strengths is crucial, and these skills don’t necessarily need to be technical. Ask how you prefer to handle challenges or what kind of projects you’re drawn to. Set yourself up for success by choosing a position that aligns with your strengths and personality.

What do I value most in life?
Gen Z wants to know that they’re making a difference through their careers, while many Gen Xers need more time to care for their kids and parents. There’s no right or wrong answer, and your choice will change. Finding the right job for you is about what you want out of your life right now and next year.
What are my deal-breakers?
Consider this the flip side of the previous two questions. What aspects of a job are you not willing to compromise on? These necessities could be big picture (opportunity for advancement) or it could be practical (mental health benefits). As you make this list, identify what items you are willing to compromise on.
What’s my vibe?
A creative space where there are no bad ideas. A steady job with a set schedule and job responsibilities. A team of ambitious go-getters ready to change the world. Think about the type of work culture gets you excited. Many job descriptions and company websites signal what their vibe is like, but if you’re not sure, you can always ask the hiring manager directly during your interview.
Do I want something more?
What if you’re not qualified for your dream job? Instead of settling, research to see how you can put that role within reach. Do you need training or professional development courses? Many employers offer professional development as an employment perk. If it’s a matter of not having the necessary experience, look into temporary roles. They can help you get your foot in the door at your dream company or in a new field.
