Trends shaping business in 2030

The global and US labor markets are rapidly evolving – both individually and in tandem. According to the World Economic Forum’s 2025 The Future of Jobs Report, which surveys more than 1,000 global employers, there are a few key drivers expected to shape and transform labor markets within the next five years.

Technological advancements

A growing number of employers expect that broadening digital access will transform their business; however, there are a few specific emerging technologies they believe will have the greatest impact.

The green transition

Compared to expectations globally, US companies anticipate the green transition will have a much greater impact on their future business.  Despite a 12% increase globally in workers acquiring green skills between 2022 and 2023, demand continues to outpace supply, so significant upskilling and reskilling will need to be prioritized.

Macroeconomic and geoeconomic shifts

Geoeconomic fragmentation and geopolitical tensions are expected to transform organizations’ business models within five years. This is due to increased trade restrictions, industrial policies, and individual country-to-country trade dynamics.

Demographic changes

The US population is aging, which is increasing the need for caregivers. This is putting pressure on the small pool of working-age individuals who need to step into those roles – while also raising concerns about long-term labor availability. As a result, employers are more pessimistic about talent availability and expect bigger challenges in attracting industry talent.

  • US job growth slowed slightly last month adding 139,000 jobs, but was above the forecast of 125,000
  • Labor force participation rate fell to 62.4%
  • Economic uncertainty is causing businesses to delay hiring or shelve financial investments
  • Consumer sentiment stabilized in May, though it remains at one of its lowest levels ever recorded
