When you’re in the middle of interviewing, it can be easy to get caught up in the process and take a job offer right away.
Before you say “yes” though, take a minute to decide whether the job is truly the right fit for you. While factors such as pay and scheduling seem like obvious dealbreakers, asking the right questions and doing some research can help you make an even better decision for your future.
1. Decide what you want out of your job
This might be a silly question, but what do you want out of your next job? What are your short-term and long-term goals? Even if you’re not sure what your five-year plan is yet, you can still decide whether you want more work-life balance, a higher salary, or opportunities for growth. By defining your priorities from the start, you’ll have a clear idea of whether a job aligns with your personal and professional aspirations.
2. Compare your salary to others
Even if a job offer comes with more money than your current salary, that doesn’t mean you should take it as is. Do a little research first. A good place to start is the Adecco Salary Calculator, which allows you to see the average salary for similar job titles in your area. It provides a clear benchmark to determine if this new opportunity is as good as it seems.
3. Review the benefits
Remember that salary is just one part of how you’re compensated, so take a look at the benefits a company offers. If the hiring manager hasn’t provided that information yet, check the organization’s website and the job description to get a better idea. Things like health insurance, paid time off, advancement opportunities, and other benefits programs can make a real difference. Even if you’re looking for a temporary job, Adecco and other staffing agencies offer valuable benefits and perks.
4. Get a feel for company culture
It can be hard to learn what it’s like to work for an employer before you start – but paying attention during the hiring process can help give you some clues. Do the employees you meet during the interview seem happy or stressed out? Another good option is to ask questions during the interview:
- What are your common work hours or shifts?
- Is the environment fast paced or more relaxed?
- Is there any flexibility for parents or caregivers?
- How do you like working here?
5. Look into the employer’s past and future
It's crucial to evaluate the health of the organization, especially if you’re hoping to stay for the long term. Is the business stable and growing? Or do they have a history of layoffs or cutbacks? Look at recent news stories or ask about their plans for growth during the job interview. If the company is publicly traded, you can also find their recent financial reports on their website.
6. Ask about opportunities to grow
One key indicator of a good employer is whether they invest in the growth of their employees. Inquire about opportunities for advancement, internal promotions, and professional development programs. An employer that offers training and growth opportunities can help you build your skills and advance your career over the long term.
7. Stop and ask if this job works for you
During the interview process, don’t hesitate to ask the hiring manager questions about the job. Try to understand the expectations for the role, how success is measured, and what challenges the team currently faces. This will give you a sense of whether you’ll thrive in the position and what the day-to-day demands will look like.
Your next job should meet your needs
Don’t let intimidation get the best of you as you’re meeting hiring managers and potential coworkers. Be sure you’re assessing whether this new job will work for you as well as for them.
The interview process is your time to ask questions and do research. Take the time to understand the full compensation package, evaluate company culture, and decide whether this role aligns with your goals.
