Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented and mechanically inclined Coil Winder to join a manufacturing team specializing in large-scale electrical equipment. This hands-on role is responsible for winding, assembling, and finishing copper coils used in industrial power systems. The position involves operating specialized winding machinery, preparing conductors, installing insulation, and completing coil assemblies in accordance with engineering drawings, bills of materials, and established production procedures.

The successful candidate will develop proficiency in horizontal and vertical winding operations, work with various coil configurations, and perform precision tasks involving copper conductors, brazing, insulation, and component alignment. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, a commitment to workplace safety, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safety Compliance: Follow established safety procedures, wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintain a safe work environment.

  • Workplace Organization: Maintain clean, organized work areas in accordance with 5S principles and established manufacturing standards.

  • Coil Winding & Assembly: Set up, wind, and finish coil assemblies according to approved procedures, technical drawings, bills of materials, and production specifications.

  • Machine Operation: Operate horizontal and vertical winding machines, load cylinders onto mandrels, prepare air bag or tin setups, and configure equipment for assigned winding operations.

  • Material Preparation: Load conductor materials onto winding equipment, operate de-reelers, and prepare the necessary components and supplies for production.

  • Winding Configurations: Produce a variety of coil designs, including horizontal and vertical disc coils, single- and multi-wire configurations, single- and multi-thread screw coils, and single- or double-layer regulatory coils.

  • Conductor Processing: Bend, manipulate, align, and join copper conductors using appropriate tools and techniques, including induction brazing where required.

  • Insulation & Component Placement: Apply insulation materials, position spacers, and install related components in accordance with technical drawings and established work instructions.

  • Assembly Completion: Unload and reposition completed coils, upend assemblies as required, and install end assemblies, washers, collars, and other specified components.

  • Quality Control: Inspect work throughout the winding process, verify measurements and tolerances, and ensure proper alignment, spacing, and workmanship using established inspection checklists.

  • Defect Correction: Identify and correct winding defects discovered during production or subsequent inspection, escalating issues when necessary.

  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine equipment care, address minor tooling issues when authorized, and submit maintenance work orders as required.

  • Cleanliness & Contamination Control: Complete required cleaning and contamination-prevention procedures, including vacuuming, magnetic sweeps, and cleaning equipment and tooling.

  • Material Handling: Safely move materials and assemblies using overhead cranes, forklifts, upenders, and other approved industrial equipment.

  • Team Collaboration: Coordinate with supervisors, team leads, engineering, quality assurance, and other manufacturing personnel to support production schedules and quality objectives.

  • Training & Development: Maintain proficiency in assigned winding procedures, pursue additional technical training, and assist with training new employees when appropriate.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong mechanical aptitude, spatial awareness, and the ability to work with complex components and assemblies.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete assignments within established production timelines.

  • Familiarity with hand tools, conductor benders, brazing equipment, winding machines, de-reelers, wire cutters, pneumatic tools, cranes, and other industrial equipment, or the ability to learn through training.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, bills of materials, specifications, and assembly instructions.

  • Attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy, product quality, and craftsmanship.

  • Ability to work with copper conductors, pressboard, paper insulation, adhesive materials, tapes, and other coil-winding supplies.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

  • Dependable work ethic, effective time management, and willingness to learn new manufacturing processes.

  • Commitment to workplace safety, cleanliness, continuous improvement, and established quality standards.

Education & Experience

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience in coil winding, electrical assembly, heavy mechanical assembly, industrial manufacturing, or power equipment production.

  • Familiarity with winding machinery, copper conductor handling, brazing, insulation application, and precision assembly.

  • Experience operating overhead cranes, forklifts, or other powered industrial equipment.

Physical Requirements

This position involves repetitive and hands-on manufacturing activities in an industrial environment. Employees must be able to perform the essential functions of the role, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Stand and walk for extended periods, potentially seven hours or more per shift.

  • Lift and handle materials weighing up to 50 pounds repeatedly.

  • Frequently bend, twist, kneel, reach, and manipulate materials and components during assembly.

  • Occasionally climb, balance, push, pull, carry, and sit as required by assigned tasks.

  • Safely operate or work around industrial machinery and material-handling equipment.

  • Work at elevated heights, including heights of 12 feet or more, when required by the assignment.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

Work Environment

The Coil Winder works in a large-scale industrial manufacturing facility producing heavy electrical equipment. The role involves operating specialized winding machinery, handling copper conductors and insulation materials, and working with industrial tools and material-handling equipment. Employees are expected to follow all applicable safety procedures and use required protective equipment.
