Our study (Job Market Index Q1/25) reveals encouraging news for job starters: 28.8% of all advertised positions are now aimed at entry-level candidates — more than ever before. This growth trend, which gained momentum after 2020, is largely driven by skills shortages and demographic changes.
Demand for certain professions will remain robust
Demand is not just about quantity. Certain professions are seeing particularly strong growth in beginner-friendly positions, especially in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and in healthcare roles such as nursing, therapeutic services, and social work. In these sectors alone, the share of entry-level jobs has increased by 7.9 percentage points over the last decade. How to successful apply as a career starter:
1. Higher qualifications are increasingly expected
Many of today’s entry-level roles require at least a vocational qualification or a degree at upper secondary or tertiary level. A Federal VET Diploma (EFZ), vocational baccalaureate, or a university of applied sciences degree is often a baseline requirement.
2. Popular entry paths in healthcare and STEM:
- Vocational training (EFZ) with additional certificates – a practical and valued route into technical and medical support roles.
- Bachelor's degrees from universities or universities of applied sciences in nursing, informatics, engineering, biotechnology or healthcare.
- Professional training after an apprenticeship – higher vocational education or technical colleges offer attractive specialisations and leadership paths.
3. Tips to boost your entry into the job market:
- Highlight your education and practical experience clearly on your CV – especially internships or projects.
- Apply strategically – target roles in high-demand industries and growth regions (e.g. Espace Mittelland, Central Switzerland, Zurich).
- Invest in short courses or additional training to fill any gaps.
- Look for structured entry programmes, like internships, traineeships, or mentoring – many mid-sized and large companies actively support young talent.
The data speaks for itself: the job market is opening up more opportunities than ever for qualified early-career professionals. Whether you're finishing a vocational apprenticeship or graduating from university, your time is now.
A solid educational foundation — combined with relevant soft skilss and motivation — puts you in a strong position to launch your career.
