How to Prepare for and Successfully Conduct a Video Job Interview?
05.09.2024

More and more employers are meeting potential candidates through video interviews, which have their own specifics, making preparation crucial. With good preparation, you can improve your performance in the job interview and increase your chances of getting hired. Below, we present five tips on how to make a good first impression remotely and how to prepare for the interview.
1. BE CONFIDENT AND PREPARED
Your performance in the interview is key. Try to relax and manage your nervousness while still appearing confident. Look into the camera, maintain eye contact, and pay attention to your interviewer, as eye contact conveys confidence and communication skills. During interviews, we assess your communication abilities, ideas, confidence level, potential, and competencies, so prepare for some general questions (e.g., about work experience, personality traits, skills, ambitions, and goals). Carefully review your role and résumé beforehand, but remember the golden rule: preparation should focus on practice and overcoming nervousness, not memorizing "correct" answers. Speak clearly and distinctly, be respectful, focus on the question at hand, and above all, be honest, positive, and precise, thinking through your responses thoroughly before answering.
2. RESEARCH YOUR POTENTIAL EMPLOYER
It's very likely that the recruiter will ask what you know about their company or why you want to work in this specific role. That’s why it’s useful to research your potential employer in advance and gather key information about the company, its services, principles, vision, and employees. Be sure to carefully read and review the job listing. We recommend preparing a list of your qualities and skills and linking them to your previous experiences and the company’s needs—this way, you’ll clearly see where the company requires someone like you and can prepare accordingly. Show them why you are the right candidate for the job.
3. ENSURE TECHNICAL READINESS
Check the functionality of your hardware and software. To avoid issues, test your equipment and programs at least 30 minutes before the interview. Are your headphones and
microphone set up and ready? Does the video call software work properly? If you encounter a technical issue, having extra time will allow you to address it calmly and start the interview stress-free. Keep in mind that technology isn’t foolproof, so it’s good to have a backup plan. We suggest having a contact (phone number or email) in case of technical difficulties. Also, close any programs or applications on your computer that might disrupt the conversation and turn off notifications on your mobile phone.
4. PREPARE YOUR SPACE AND ENVIRONMENT
In addition to technical preparation, don’t forget to arrange the space where you’ll have your video interview. Make sure the environment is tidy and free of potential distractions, such as roommates, television, radio, background noise, or pets. Be mindful of what’s visible behind you and whether it might be distracting to your interviewer. We recommend a test call using the same application you’ll be using for the interview to check if all settings are functioning correctly.
5. PERSONAL APPEARANCE
Your appearance matters. Even though you are at home and having a video interview, you should dress appropriately and maintain a professional approach. Dress as if you were attending an in-person interview. As the saying goes, "Clothes make the person," and a first impression on a potential employer is very important. Add a confident smile and a polite greeting at the start and end of the call to enhance your professional image.
For the final part of the interview, prepare a list of questions that interest you—this will demonstrate your proactiveness. Most importantly, be yourself. You’ll make the best impression on recruiters by being authentic and genuine, as honesty is highly valued. Trust yourself and believe that you are the right candidate for the job.
Good luck!
