Appearance in Interviews: How to Choose the Right Outfit for Success

Job hunting is not an easy task; in fact, it's a real project. When we succeed in getting an invitation for an interview, it’s an opportunity worth seizing. Your task is to make a great first impression – which means you need to be well-groomed.

People form opinions about others based on first impressions. This also applies to recruiters conducting the selection process, which is why it’s important to prepare well for an interview. Our clothing is something we wear every day, and through it, we unknowingly send a lot of messages to the world around us – who we are, what we do, what our hobbies are, what we are involved in, and also, in which sector, field, profession, or organization we are (or want to be) employed.

At the first contact with a candidate, we inevitably start by assessing their appearance. The candidate’s external appearance creates the first impression. This is the first feature we notice and the one that sticks in our memory the most. The clothes a candidate chooses for various types of selection interviews can tell us a lot about them.

Choosing the right attire can work in favor of the candidate, while poor clothing choices may reduce their chances of being hired. For instance, if we are conducting an interview for a position that requires formal attire, and the candidate arrives in shorts, a t-shirt, and sandals, this signals that the candidate lacks understanding of the expectations for the position. It's not just about the clothes they've chosen, but also the fact that they didn't research the job, the employer, or the company culture before the interview. So, how do you ensure that your appearance is exactly right for every interview?

Regardless of the company or position you're invited to interview for, ask yourself the following five questions:

1. Which company have I been invited to? Some companies have established dress codes. Before the interview, check if the company you’re going to has one. You can also look for photos of their employees online to get a sense of their expectations regarding the appearance of current or future employees.
2. What is the expected appearance for my position? If you've been invited to an interview for a position in manufacturing, formal attire isn’t necessary. On the other hand, if you're interviewing for a leadership role, formal business attire is expected.
3. Who is my audience? It's important to know who will be conducting the interview. The more we know about them, the better we can prepare. It's also helpful to find out how many people will be asking questions and whether the interview will be in a group format.
4. What does my appearance convey? How do people perceive me, and what might they think about me at first glance?
5. What can I do to avoid negative perceptions? Before the interview, think about whether it might be better to dress differently than you usually do. Small adjustments can create a better impression – for example, not exposing tattoos and piercings, opting for a more conservative outfit, hairstyle, and footwear.

What is inappropriate attire for an interview? For any interview, it's inappropriate to show up looking disheveled. Wrinkled clothes that don’t fit properly or don’t look right are unsuitable. Avoid clothing that reveals shoulders, cleavage, or the lower back, and make sure your clothes are at least knee-length. For women, special attention should be given to makeup. Strongly colored makeup, especially lipstick, can harm the impression you want to make. Do not wear sneakers, as they can appear unprofessional, and avoid open-toed shoes. Flip-flops, sandals, and clogs, though comfortable in summer, are not acceptable. When dressing, avoid unnecessary accessories that might distract the interviewer.

What is appropriate attire for an interview? A conservative style of dress is typical. The attire should be comfortable, functional, professional, aligned with your personality, properly fitting your body, and modern at least in its basic form.

For men, it’s recommended to wear a light-colored shirt (white or light blue) and a dark-colored suit (navy or dark gray) with long sleeves. Pair it with trousers made from the same fabric, fine shoes, and a tie. Socks should be mid-length and dark-colored, unless it’s a creative position. The belt and shoes should match. Only wear a wristwatch as an accessory. Arrive clean-shaven, or if you have a beard or mustache, make sure they are neatly groomed.

For women in the business world, it's advisable to choose a pantsuit or skirt suit with a shirt that is properly tailored and covers the neckline. If you wear a skirt, opt for non-shiny skin-toned tights. Tights are not appropriate, and cardigans or sweaters are not desirable. Choose closed-toe shoes with a heel, but only if you're comfortable walking in them; otherwise, opt for flats. Apply makeup in a way that feels comfortable and allows you to communicate naturally. The same applies to nails – they should be neat and painted in a neutral color.

In general, we appear most professional when we choose clothing with clean lines, neutral colors, avoid overdoing textures and colors, and opt for attire that is suitable for the climate, location, and sector.
