What are deepfakes ?

Deepfake technology uses artificial intelligence to create realistic images, audio, and video hoaxes. These manipulated videos and images can be incredibly convincing, often indistinguishable from genuine content, spreading false information that seems to originate from trusted sources.

How does deepfakes works in Adecco?

1) The fraudster contacts the (Adecco) victim via any communication tool (e.g. Linkedin, WhatsApp, etc.) and impersonate an Adecco colleague’s voice, pictures or even appearance in a video call.

2) The fraudster will ask the victim to

(i) make a payment from an Adecco account to a bank account controlled by the fraudster,

(ii) provide privileged access, or

(iii) provide sensitive data that could lead to blackmail, for example.

Note: Deepfake technology can impersonate anyone.

How can you detect deepfakes scam?

The following are signs of possible deepfake content :

– Unusual or awkward facial positioning.
– Unnatural facial or body movement.
– Unnatural colouring.
– Videos that look odd when zoomed in or magnified.
– Inconsistent audio.
– People that don’t blink.

In textual deepfakes , there are a few indicators:

– Misspellings.
– Sentences that don’t flow naturally.
– Suspicious source email addresses.
– Phrasing that doesn’t match the supposed sender.
– Out-of-context messages that aren’t relevant to any discussion, event or issue.

What can you do if you encounter deepfake scam? How should you react ?

As a general rule, always #StayAlert .

If you receive a message or a call that you weren’t expecting (even if it appears to be from someone you know), urging that you perform an unusual request, or if you get an offer that seems too good to be true:

– Always verify the identity of the requestor

(i) by asking clarifying questions that only the alleged Adecco sender would know how to answer and

(ii) confirming the legitimacy of the request by contacting the alleged Adecco sender of the message to confirm via an alternative method such as their official telephone number or email address;
– Do not open any related attachment.
– Do confirm the request via an alternative trusted method of communication.
– Do not reply.
– Do not send any money.
– Do not send personal information and/or identification documents (not even copies).
– Do not give details of bank accounts or payment cards.
