London Working: Our new programme to help you overcome barriers to employment

Are you a Newham or Barking and Dagenham resident looking for work?

Are you struggling with long-term unemployment or other barriers to employment and need a boost?

If this sounds like you, read on to discover how our newly launched programme can help with free training, support, upskilling, and priority job access.

Introducing London Working – Your new programme to work-readiness

Unemployment in the capital is sky-high – in 2024, London recorded the highest unemployment of any UK region. Despite this, London businesses say they are facing talent shortages, especially within the public sector.

We believe unemployed jobseekers should be able to fill these vacancies – but to do so, they need proper support.

That’s why we’ve teamed up with London Boroughs of Newham, and Barking & Dagenham to launch a new programme to tackle the issue – London Working.

What can London Working offer you?

You can register for the programme by computer, tablet or mobile phone through our accessible software portal.

Once you register, we’ll:

1. Check your eligibility

2. Upskill you

3. Offer expert support

4. Provide access to employment opportunities

Who is eligible for the programme?

We’re looking for anyone experiencing barriers to employment who is a resident of Newham or Barking and Dagenham.

These may be, for example:

  • Long-term unemployed jobseekers who have been out of work for longer than six months and face outdated skills and experience
  • Those with a criminal record who need an employer to give them a chance
  • Armed forces veterans looking to return to civilian life
  • Parents looking for work that fits around life
  • Refugees looking to settle into work in the UK
  • Those with experience being in care looking for a boost and extra help
  • Neurodiverse individuals who need specialist support and understanding

How can we support you?

Everyone faces different barriers to employment. For some, it can be overcoming stigma and bias or a lack of confidence. For others, it can be overcoming skills and experience gaps that quickly result in extended periods of unemployment.

As the UK’s largest workforce provider, we can give you expert 1:1 support where you need it most to overcome these barriers.

This includes:

  • Upskilling
  • Essential skills training
  • Confidence-building workshops
  • Accredited courses
  • Expert CV advice
  • Mock interview sessions
  • Additional specialist support where needed

Once you’ve sharpened your skills, we’ll connect you with a wide range of suitable vacancies, including priority access for selected roles, so you have a chance to interview before other jobseekers.

And once you’re in work, we’ll help build your career, with ongoing progression and opportunities to develop skills even further.
