Operations Supervisor – Waste & Recycling | Wanganui
We are seeking an experienced Operations Supervisor to lead day-to-day activities across a busy waste and recycling collection fleet and transfer station operation in Wanganui.
This is a Permanent Full-Time role, working 45 hours per week (7:00am – 4:30pm, Monday to Friday), with on-call support required as needed.
In this varied and hands-on leadership role, you will be responsible for organising, supervising, and supporting daily operations across trucks, transfer station activities, drivers, and plant. You will also be required to step in and assist operationally, including driving duties when required, to ensure services continue running smoothly.
Working closely with senior management, you will help ensure all operations are safe, compliant, and completed efficiently. You will play a key role in planning and dispatch, monitoring fleet activity, supporting staff, managing day-to-day issues, and identifying and managing operational risks and hazards.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys a fast-paced environment, leading from the front, and keeping operations running smoothly while supporting a strong team culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise daily operations across fleet and transfer station activities.
- Lead, support, and coordinate drivers and operational staff.
- Assist with planning, dispatching, and scheduling of work.
- Monitor fleet compliance and operational performance.
- Ensure health, safety, and environmental procedures are followed at all times.
- Identify and manage site and operational risks and hazards.
- Support staff training, performance, and day-to-day guidance.
- Assist operationally when required, including driving duties.
- Maintain accurate records and operational reporting.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders to ensure service delivery targets are met.
What We’re Looking For
- Minimum 3+ years’ supervisory experience in a multi-functional operational role.
- Previous experience in transport, logistics, or waste/recycling operations.
- Strong leadership and people management skills.
- Confident coordinating both staff and fleet operations.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong organisational skills with attention to detail.
- Competent using MS Office (intermediate level).
- A practical, hands-on approach to work.
Requirements
- Full Class 4 licence and willingness to drive when required.
- Legal right to work in New Zealand (NZ residency or valid work visa).
- Ability to pass a pre-employment medical assessment (including drug test).
- Satisfactory Ministry of Justice (MOJ) criminal record check.
- WTR (Wheels, Tracks & Rollers) licence would be an advantage.
