Adecco Sydney 2000 Update

14/08/00

August 14, 2000 -- In April 1996, following an intensive selection process, SOCOG, the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games, appointed Adecco as its Official Staffing Services Supporter.
SOCOG projected a team consisting of 2500 full time staff and additional supplementary staff peaking at 1000 during Games time. This task became the single focus of the Olympic Recruitment Centre, established by Adecco in June 1996, in Sydney, Australia.

To date the Adecco Olympic Recruitment Centre has received in excess of 50 000 applications, local, national and international, from enthusiastic individuals, keen to take their place in history by working for the Olympic Games, the world's largest flexible workforce.

While Adecco has accepted applicants from outside of Australia, generally it has been because these candidates have brought significant expertise from other large scale events such as World Cup or previous Olympic Games. There are a small number of unique individuals who choose to move around the world from one major event to another.

Adecco's Olympic Recruitment Centre has been successful in filling the most diverse range of job categories imaginable from entry level positions to senior executive roles. Like many organisations, SOCOG has staffing needs in regular departments such as:
  • Accounting
  • Legal
  • Human Resources
  • Marketing

as well as the more specific Olympic requirements in areas such as:
  • Sport
  • Sponsorship
  • Spectator Services
  • Logistics
  • Protocol
  • Ceremonies

Some of the most unusual job roles filled by Adecco include:
  • Vexillologists - experts in the protocol of flags
  • Mascot Managers - to ensure the appropriate usage of the Olympic Mascots, Syd, Millie and Ollie
  • Torch Relay Sector Coordinators - to liaise with all government bodies and essential services necessary for the smooth operation of the Olympic Torch Relay
  • Dance Crew - to provide customer service to the Olympic athletes who will visit the night club in the Athletes Village

The supplementary staff who fill short term roles, also include diverse job categories not typically seen by most recruitment companies e.g. performers for the Olympic Arts Festivals and Ceremonies including stilt walkers, costume designers, didjeridoo players, set designers, announcers and even a zoo keeper.

Prior to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Recruitment Project, Adecco had limited experience with a large scale event, though this experience has led to the selection of Adecco as the supplier of staff for other major events including:
  • World Expo 2000 - Hannover, Germany
  • Euro 2000 - Belgium & The Netherlands
  • America's Cup 2000- Auckland, New Zealand
  • Commonwealth Games 2002- Manchester, England
  • Expo 2002 - Switzerland

Adecco established four key marketing objectives for its Sponsorship of the Olympic Games:
  • Increase brand awareness
  • Increase staff pride
  • Increase revenue
  • Increase candidate database

Each of these objectives has been met and exceeded.

With just seven weeks to go until the Opening Ceremony, Adecco has filled all of the vacancies for SOCOG and is now ensuring that all Games time operational procedures are in place. The major Games time task will be to ensure the smooth operations of the 1000 casual staff supplied by Adecco. 50% of these staff, fondly referred to as the "Village People", will provide services in the Olympic Villages - Athletes Village, Media Village, Technical Officials Village.

During an Olympic Games, the Organising Committee is not the only organisation which experiences greatly increased demand for Olympic labour. Fellow sponsors, organisations contracted to provide services to the Olympic Games and "Games Impacted Industries" also require labour at this time. Games Impacted Industries represent the industry segments which will have greater than usual demands for their goods or services due to the Olympic Games. Hospitality, transport, telecommunications, tourism, food services, retail would be included in this group. To satisfy the needs of these groups of companies, Adecco has established the Olympic Labour Network, a consortium of 8 major and 50 minor recruitment companies who are working together to maximise the available labour in Sydney during the Olympic Games.

Adecco has utilised its Olympic knowledge and expertise to ensure the effectiveness of the Olympic Labour Network and to date has filled 5000 vacancies. These positions include the following:
