Building Careers

At Adecco, fostering the careers of young people not only helps us build lifetime relationships with the best and brightest associates, it also underscores our commitment to improving the employability of new workers in today’s global labour market.

Japan is just one country where Adecco is using its knowledge of the workplace to inspire young people to pursue the best employment opportunities while tackling the country’s skill shortages.

The combination of Japan’s declining birth rate and aging population means employers must fight to attract the best young workers to grow their businesses.

“In Japan, the birth rate is just over half the level it was two decades ago,” explains Mark Du Ree, Country Manager of Adecco Japan. “As a result companies are making every effort to employ excellent workers and the labour market is very competitive.”

In such a strong labour market, new graduates face intense pressure to enter the workforce and start building their careers the moment they finish their education. Many graduates often rush into the wrong career paths, contributing to over 35 percent of young Japanese leaving their first job in less than three years.

“Students appreciate the opportunity to enrich their career-building skills before they pursue their first job,” says Mr Du Ree.

Adecco’s experience with employing young people in labour markets around the world has provided us with a unique insight into the challenges facing Japanese graduates as they enter the workforce.

Our broad variety of training programmes are equipping Japan’s younger generations with the resources they need, helping new graduates match their goals with job opportunities while ensuring the future competitiveness of Japan’s economy.

This year, Adecco headed back into the classroom to provide Japan’s promising graduates the best career advice to help them plan their futures. Mr Du Ree served as a visiting professor at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) in Oita Prefecture, giving lectures to both Japanese and international students on the global workplace and providing soft skills training that is attractive to today’s top companies.
